Preservation Of Studs and Bolts – Case #2
PROBLEM: The plant was undergoing a two-year shutdown. Many dismantled stud bolts and nuts at the site needed to be cleaned and continuously protected against salt air, humidity, and moisture in an aggressive atmosphere.
SOLUTION: Stud bolts and nuts were dipped in VpCI®-422 rust remover (see Below for Product Info) and subsequently cleaned/neutralized with VpCI®-414. The items were sprayed with VpCI®-337 corrosion inhibitor before wrapping and heat shrinking VpCI®-126 Shrink Film around the nuts and bolts.
CONCLUSION: These Cortec® products provided a high-performance, cost-effective, easy-to-use method of preservation for some of the smaller components onsite.
VpCI – 126 Shrink Film
Description: Cortec® VpCI®-126 Shrink Film, combines the latest film technology with the most effective corrosion protection for all of your metal products. Sealing your product in Cortec VpCI Shrink Film will protect a wide variety of metals from rust, tarnish, stains, white rust, and oxidation for up to 5 years.* It’s as easy as putting your product in Cortec® VpCI®– Shrink Film!
Application: • Will shrink up to 80% of original size • Multi-metal corrosion inhibition providing contact, barrier, and vapor phase protection • Produced with industrial grade LDPE for superior mechanical properties (see chart) • Excellent sealing properties using sealing temperatures of 190-240OF • Will shrink using a wide variety of shrink tools • Excellent transparency (<10% Haze) • Excellent film for shrink tunnel applications (depending on temperature and dwell time) • Film is recyclable and non-hazardous
VpCI – 337 Waterborne Corrosion Inhibitor
Description: VpCI®-337 is a ready-to-use waterborne corrosion inhibitor for temporary protection. Vapor phase corrosion inhibitors in VpCI®-337 migrate and protect metal surfaces, resulting in time and cost savings. VpCI®-337 is used to protect the edges of coils and stacks or to fog void spaces, tanks, containers, packages, and enclosures. These laborsaving techniques use a minimum of product to protect large areas or volumes. VpCI®-337 is effective on ferrous and non-ferrous metals as well as aluminum, plated steels, and copper. VpCI®-337 is consistently successful in providing protection to the basic metals, metalworking, and packaging industries. In most cases, products protected by VpCI®-337 are ready-to-use. No degreasing or stripping is necessary by most end users. The metal will retain a clean, rust-free surface. In most cases, the thin protective film will not affect paint ability, conductivity, appearance, or any other important property of metals or alloys. VpCI®-337 is also available in a cold weather version. VpCI®-337 Winterized has a lower freezing point for the convenience of application and storage in cold temperatures.
Application:
• In-process protection
• Edge spray of coils and sheet stock
• Void spaces
• Double wall void spaces
• Fogging

VpCI – 422 Organic Rust Remover
Description: VpCI®-422 effectively removes rust and tarnish from steel, iron, copper, and brass. VpCI®-422 removes corrosion from metal without creating waste disposal difficulties and is more operator friendly than traditional rust removers. VpCI®-422 G is a modification of VpCI®-422, which is recommended for galvanized steel. It will not adversely affect most paints, plastics, wood, textiles, ceramics, or rubber when used as recommended. Removing corrosion from metal is easy; just apply VpCI®-422 and rinse with water. VpCI®-422 is completely organic and does not require special disposal for typical use. It is especially helpful for outdoor and marine applications where chemical waste disposal can be a problem. In rare situations, waste treatment may be required if large quantities of pollutants are accumulated during cleaning.
Application: VpCI®-422 can be applied using spray equipment including air and airless spray as well as by brush or dip. For spray, brush, or roll-on application; remove loose rust or tarnish. Then apply VpCI®-422 concentrate to surface, let chemical stand for 10 to 15 minutes, and rinse with an
alkaline solution (Cortec® VpCI®-41x Series). Typically, little or no rubbing is required. Reapply if necessary.
Package: VpCI®-422 and VpCI®-422 G are available in 5 gallon (19 L), 55 gallon (208 L) drums, totes, and bulk. To ensure best product performance, store in original packaging, indoors, and out of direct sunlight at 40-100 °F (4-38 °C).
